TOP BEGINNER TOOLS FOR BETTER DIY PROJECTS

This is a list of beginner tools that we always have on hand when we are working on new projects or repairing old projects. We have a long list of projects that we have completed this year, but honestly we are just beginners, like the doors on our red barn chicken coop. None of the brands are sponsored, it is just similar to what we use on our little piece of dirt.

Impact Driver and Hammer Drill

These are the way to make projects go significantly faster. Choose the brand you prefer. The batteries and charger are necessary for the first purchase. After that you can get other tools and use the same few batteries.

All Purpose Screws & Bits

We use screws because it is easier to make corrections. Also we often repurpose or move items later and the most frustration part of those projects is when we thought it would be a great idea to use nails the first go around. Please pre drill your screw holes. I would say this is standard practice or learned habit in our home. We have split more end pieces than we care to admit. In fact it made us late, very late to a wedding one time while dating.

Hand Saw

To effectively make projects at home, you’ll have to have a saw. I can’t tell you to get a table saw, chop saw and skill saw or whatever other saws might be out there – but this can do almost everything you need. It is the largest of the beginner tools so take it slow while you are learning to use it. It is always the option to get a manual hand saw if that would work better for you. You’ll want to get a larger battery, if you choose to go cordless on this saw. Check the manufacture or brand suggestions for voltage.

Protective Items

This make it on the list of beginner tools because it will save your eyes, ear and hands for later projects. Please consider this your safety warning and encouragement to take precautions when working with power tools. A few dollars to protect your eyes, ears, and hands are well worth it. A few extra moments to make sure your hands are out the way, your kids are standing back or you have you clothes pulled back can save you from a mistake.

Saw Horses

If you don’t have a work bench or table saw these are versatile and useful tools. These have been used in a bunch of different applications around the house.

Speed Square

Easy to make straight lines for cuts, nothing fancy but these are constantly used at our home. We actually lost the last one recently so we have it on the shopping list.

Level (24″ or Larger)

A simple level will get you better results on many project you try. It will not always be necessary but it will be useful. It is also works as a great straight edge, if you have a long cut. Get something at least 24inches or 2 feet long.
