HOW TO BETTER PLAN GARDEN SEEDS IN ZONE 6B 2023

We are starting our whole garden from seed this year in heartiness Zone 6b. It will be the first time we are starting garden seeds and hoping to get a bunch of plants. Honestly – in comparison to others – our garden will be miniature size. We are hoping to learn and practice this year and next year. Hopefully by 2025 we will know what vegetables and flowers we love to grow and which we don’t. So, here we go. Come along on with us, learning as we learn!

We will share with you our plan for starting garden seeds. Due to family schedules and weather conditions we are just getting our garden tilled. Honestly, we don’t know if that is a big deal or not. We have never been at a home with a garden long enough to have a developed garden.

FIRST – If you are getting here, wanting to plant seeds, but it is already April. Just start your seeds in the garden and give it a try! You will likely still get a crop.

These are the items and location that we are planning to start our seeds. We don’t have any real idea what will work best, we don’t know if our times will work and we honestly have close to no experience starting seeds! You might be able to notice as we go through the plan, there are seeds I am planning to start in multiple ways. Hopefully we will get enough plants to fill the garden. If we have too many – that will just be a happy problem.

This is the largest planting week, by far and I have mostly avoided it. Honestly Meg doesn’t like change or doing new things – for risk of failure. But! We are proud of her for giving it a try – good job girl.

We also have an upcoming post on our milk jug garden. Our hope is to share out seed starting mix, a better resource for seeding starting mix and the simple tutorial. Find out in May of 2023 if anything has grown!

April Seed Starting

We are starting the following seeds during the month of April, or the end of March. We hope to have these ready to move outside in good timing and if the cucumber fruit timing is right. It would be great to have some fresh cucumbers and homemade pickles this year. How fun! Our friend MARANDA is the best and offered to process some of our vegetables this year. What a gem.

MAY SEED STARTING

Here are the flowers we are planning to start around the property. We have these different varieties of flowers for bugs and beauty. Meg would rather have a field of wildflowers than a garden – but thankfully she married a practical man. There is also large spaces under our tree row that goes on two sides of the house that have little to no sun during the day. Our goal is fill it with wildflowers so that poison ivy doesn’t spring up. We will let you know how it works out.

July Planting – new post

Let us know in the comments changes you would make to our plan. We are excited and hopeful for produce from the garden that not only feeds us this summer but overflows so that we have some to preserve for the winter.

Q & A

Where did you get your seeds?
Gurney’s Seed & Nursery Co. and Burpee. There were some I wanted from both locations – we are just trying it out. There will be three or four varieties of tomatoes in our garden, we don’t need to have thirty varieties. We are looking for food not ornaments.

SHOPPING LIST

These are many of the items you might need to start seeds or plant the garden. Some of these items we have used, others are similar to what we use.
